Equality and Diversity Awareness

Full or half day | Online or in person

This interactive course explores understanding and behaviour around different areas of equality and diversity. Through interactive discussions and activities, the trainees will explore a range of topics in a way that relates to their own work and environments. A big theme of the session will be building cultures based around respect and learning, building confidence to tackle an ever-changing world in a way that is and remains inclusive.

Several themes will run throughout the course, with plenty of emphasis on the importance of communication and how we all have a role to play in building inclusive environments.

What's Covered

The following topics will be explored:

  • What do we mean by Equality, Diversity and Inclusion? Going beyond the Equality Act 2010 to recognise there's more to it than law and policy.
  • We'll discuss of how different characteristics create challenges in different ways, including a look at the difference between equality and equity.
  • Barriers to Inclusivity: An overview of inclusive language, unconscious bias and microaggressions in the workplace, plus a brief look at why barriers exist in society in the first place.
  • We'll explore the barriers from several angles, including how it can impact the workplace and how to build a culture of learning to overcome challenges
  • Understanding and Respecting Individuals: How to identify their needs, make adjustments and create inclusive spaces.
  • We'll look at how identity is at the core of many inclusivity issues and how we can embrace differences in a way that supports both individuals and collaboration.
  • Culture and Behaviour: Embedding principles, ways of thinking and good practice into yourself and spreading that culture to the people around you.
  • We'll cover how to challenge situations and people where change is needed, while avoiding conflict and instead building understanding towards positive change.

The course will focus on the workplace, but much of the material will be valid anywhere your customers are, or indeed anywhere that people interact. Throughout the course we'll discuss the benefits of applying equality and diversity principles, beyond just the legal requirements.
